Fentanyl Detox and Addiction Treatment in New Jersey

The United States has been gripped for far too long by an opioid epidemic that began with opioid painkillers in the 1990s and then moved to the more potent and dangerous heroin. When things began to look brighter, fentanyl appeared on the streets alongside heroin and other drugs like meth, cocaine, Methadone, and even fake pressed Xanax bars.

Fentanyl, more potent and deadlier than heroin, has exacerbated the issue, significantly adding to the number of drug overdose deaths in this country. All of this highlights the need for treatment. Don't hesitate to contact us if you are looking for fentanyl detox and addiction treatment in New Jersey. We will introduce you to our evidence-based and holistic fentanyl addiction treatment techniques and put you in contact with a reputable, carefully selected detox clinic.

What is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl, along with other opiates and opioids, is derived from the opium poppy plant, much like the rest of these substances. While opium has a long history of medicinal and recreational use, synthetic opioids pose a greater risk due to their increased potency. Like other opioids, fentanyl blocks pain signals from reaching the brain while producing a pleasurable high. This makes it ideal for pain relief.

Fentanyl, 100 times more potent than morphine, is used to treat chronic pain, facilitate surgical procedures, and as self-medication for emotional and mental distress. This makes the chemical more accessible to abuse and leads to easy overdose. Unfortunately, fentanyl is often mixed up with other medications to make it even more robust, increasing the danger associated with taking them.

Effects, Signs, and Symptoms of Fentanyl Addiction

Long-term fentanyl usage is associated with many harmful physiological and psychological consequences. If you or someone you care about shows any of these symptoms, get professional help:

  • Headaches

  • Itching

  • Dizziness

  • Blurry vision

  • Seizures

  • Euphoria

  • Slowed breathing

  • Mellowness

  • Drowsiness

Users who use fentanyl in quantities that exceed those doctors recommend report feeling "extreme euphoria." Plus, they'll experience calmness and serenity akin to the "high" one gets from heroin. These emotions are associated with various potentially catastrophic physical repercussions, including fatal overdose.

Fentanyl Overdose

Abuse of fentanyl, or even proper usage as prescribed by a doctor, may result in addiction, dependency, and tolerance. Tolerance (taking increasingly large doses to achieve the same "high")  dramatically increases the chance of overdosing. When using opiates of any kind, this is a huge cause for worry since an opiate overdose brings the user dangerously close to death. Fentanyl overdose symptoms include:

  • A state characterized by sleepiness or drowsiness.

  • Dizziness.

  • Irregular or shallow breathing or complete cessation of breathing.

  • Confusion.

  • The eyes' pupils get narrower, and there is a dark circle in each center.

  • A struggle to take a breath.

  • Not capable of either responding or waking up.

Fentanyl can suppress breathing or possibly stop it altogether at massive dosages. As a result of this influence, hypoxia (low oxygen levels in the bloodstream) could develop. This could also cause irreversible brain damage, coma, or death. Do not hesitate to contact 9-1-1 if you or someone you care about is suffering what could be the consequences of an overdose.

Detoxing From Fentanyl in New Jersey

Fentanyl detox services generally include:

  • Prescription Drug Administration.

  • Depending on the patient's needs, rehabilitation centers may provide inpatient/residential, outpatient/intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, or sober living environments.

  • Behavioral therapies and training for the prevention of relapse.

New Jersey is home to a wide variety of excellent detox centers run by public and private organizations, so you or a loved one may choose one that meets your requirements. Medical detox refers to detoxification conducted under the supervision of medical professionals with the use of FDA-approved medications to help ease withdrawal symptoms.

Fentanyl and other poisons accumulated in the body after a long period of abuse are flushed out during medical detox. A person may experience negative emotions during this period called withdrawal symptoms. Even while medical detox is easier on the body than going through withdrawal on your own, it still requires effort.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, female patients have it rougher during opioid withdrawal than males. This group has also been shown to have a greater risk of relapse as well as increased levels of cravings.

Fentanyl withdrawal symptoms include:

  • Excessive yawning.

  • Symptoms are similar to the flu, such as a sore throat, fever, chills, and excessive sweating.

  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep.

  • Mood swings.

  • If unchecked, anxiety may cause a person to have a racing heart and sudden panic episodes.

  • Irritability and a general state of discomfort.

  • Intestinal distress, nausea, and vomiting.

  • Blood pressure fluctuations.

  • Depressive episodes (if left untreated, depression may cause suicidal thoughts).

The typical duration of a fentanyl detox program is between three and seven days. However, the degree of the addiction will determine how long it takes. In New Jersey, a facility with the capabilities for fentanyl detox and addiction treatment will often need blood tests to determine how long a patient will likely remain in a detox program.

Medication-Assisted Treatment and Behavioral Therapies During Fentanyl Detox in New Jersey

When someone is going through fentanyl detox, their doctor may give them one or more of the following drugs:

  • Tramadol

  • Methadone

  • Buprenorphine

  • Methadone

In addition, depression, anxiety, and despair are often experienced by those going through the withdrawal process from fentanyl. Common medicines used to treat these conditions are anti-anxiety drugs and SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Doctors may sometimes recommend additional medicines to treat other mental health issues. Medications like Xanax that have a high potential for abuse are not something that would be prescribed.

The safest, most efficient approach to beating fentanyl dependency (following detox) is via fentanyl addiction behavioral therapy. Included below are some advantages of participating in a fentanyl addiction therapy session:

  • Dual diagnosis, also known as co-occurring disorder treatment, aims to treat both mental health illnesses and addiction.

  • A built-in sober community that provides both group support and camaraderie.

  • Therapy for preventing relapses and other initiatives is designed to reduce substance usage.

  • Counseling for individuals, groups, and families facilitates reconnection with loved ones.

When you join a reputable program for fentanyl detox and addiction treatment In New Jersey, expect to participate in at least one of the following behavioral therapies:

  • Relapse Prevention Therapy

  • Motivational Interviewing Therapy

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

  • Motivational Enhancement Therapy

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy

  • Neurofeedback Therapy

  • Family Therapy

  • Holistic Therapies
