Drug and Alcohol Rehabs in NJ That Accept United Healthcare Insurance

Drug and alcohol use disorders have reached epidemic levels in the United States. The State of New Jersey has also been affected by the wave of substance abuse due to the easy availability of opioids like heroin and other drugs like alcohol. In 2019, SAMSHA reported that more than 780,000 residents of New Jersey were struggling with a substance and alcohol abuse disorder within the past year.

Thanks to the government's intervention, more effort is being put into researching, spreading awareness, and treating substance use disorders. In 2020, 16.7% (130,000) of New Jersey residents received treatment for drugs, tobacco products, and alcohol use disorders. Heroin and alcohol received the highest admissions (60,681), while tobacco products came second (45,907).

Additionally, the availability of drug and alcohol rehab insurance coverage from companies like United Healthcare Insurance has also boosted treatment numbers. In this post, we look at all you need to know about United Healthcare Insurance for drug and alcohol treatment and rehab facilities that accept its coverage.

What is United Healthcare Insurance?

Between April 2020 and April 2021, there have been 2,840 reported drug overdose deaths in New Jersey. Still, United Healthcare and other stakeholders are trying to lower that number by providing easy access to treatment.

United Healthcare is a global company focusing on providing access to the proper care for its members. With more than 1.3 million healthcare professionals and physicians, and 6,5000 health facilities across the United States, the company offers health benefit programs for all lifestyles and ages.

Drugs and alcohol rehab treatment are among the health benefits offered by United Healthcare. Depending on your insurance policy, location, and chosen provider, the company might pay for some or all of the associated rehab treatment costs. The government also introduced the Affordable Care Act, which compels insurance companies to cover the following health issues:

  • Pediatric services, including vision and oral care.

  • Ambulatory patient service.

  • Preventive and wellness services.

  • Emergency services.

  • Rehabilitative and habilitative services.

  • Mental health and substance use disorder services.

United Healthcare New Jersey Health Plans

Even if you are self-employed or don't have employer insurance, residents of New Jersey still have more insurance options than they might think. United Healthcare offers a wide range of healthcare solutions to meet the needs of its members, including those struggling with drug and alcohol use disorders.

The following are the commercial health plans offered by United Healthcare in New Jersey:

All Savers Health Plans

This self-funded health plan helps people pay for everyday health-related expenses before they meet their deductible. The plan is under the United Healthcare Motion program that provides financial incentives by reimbursing out-of-pocket medical expenses.

United Healthcare Choice and Choice Plus

This plan allows you to select a specialist or physician from United Healthcare's network without needing referrals to earn benefits. Members under Choice must receive treatment from in-network providers to receive coverage. Out-of-network providers can only receive benefits if it's an emergency. With United Choice Plus, you can receive some low benefits for treatment provided by out-of-network providers.

United Healthcare Options PPO Plans

This health plan allows you to choose an out-of-network specialist or provider without a referral. However, it's your responsibility to get prior approvals for both in and out-of-network providers. If you choose an out-of-network provider, your out-of-pocket expenses will be higher, but you can opt for a lower benefit with higher deductibles and co-insurance.

United Healthcare Insurance Costs

Using your United Healthcare Group insurance plan may be easier if you understand some standard health insurance terms when calculating and managing your rehab treatment costs. Here are the different types of health insurance costs and how they work:

  • Premium: This is the amount you pay monthly or annually to keep your health plan active. Some programs have higher premiums and lower deductibles, while others offer low premiums with high deductibles.

  • Deductible: This is the amount you pay out-of-pocket for treatment before the health plan can start helping with payments. While it has a higher upfront premium, low deductible plans are ideal for members with substance use disorders.

  • Co-pay: Co-pay is a fixed amount you have to clear (usually when you receive the treatment) for covered treatment services. The amount will vary depending on the type of treatment and provider.

  • Co-insurance: It's the percentage you and your insurance provider decide to share when paying treatment costs. Typically, co-insurance percentage range from 20% to 40%, and the insurance company clears the rest.

Drug and Alcohol Rehab Treatments Covered By United Healthcare

As part of its better health program, United Healthcare covers drug and alcohol use disorder rehab and other forms of substance use treatments. However, the range and breadth of treatment coverage will vary depending on your specific coverage plan, location, and chosen treatment provider.

If you are unsure about your coverage, call the number on the back of your health insurance card to speak to a representative. The insurance representative will help you find local rehab facilities within the United Healthcare network. They can also estimate your out-of-pocket expenses depending on your plan and the type of treatment you are looking for.

Typically for inpatient treatment, most United Healthcare plans will cover detox for alcohol and drug abuse since the process can potentially be medically dangerous and requires medical supervision to prevent complications. In addition, depending on your plan, United Healthcare insurance will cover the following drug and alcohol rehab treatments:

  • Inpatient/residential treatment: Typically lasts for 30 to 120 days and is for members struggling with severe substance abuse and addiction who are beginning their recovery journey. It features 24-hour structured and intensive medical attention with drug-free housing.

  • Outpatient rehab treatment: Recommended for people that have gone through inpatient treatment to ensure they remain clean. Outpatient treatment involves numerous programs and therapies that support your path to recovery.

  • Medication-assisted treatment: Mostly used during detoxification, medication-assisted treatment is supervised by a medical physician in a medical setting to manage life-threatening withdrawal symptoms.

  • Intensive outpatient programs: In these programs, you will have to attend treatment at a rehab facility for at least four to eight hours daily for several days a week. It is common among patients who are at high risk of relapse.
